SIMILIPAL
BIOSPHERE
Similipal, the National Park covering an area of 2750 Sq Kms.has
been selected as one of the nine Tiger-Projects in India. For
a nature loving tourist the entire Park with its evergreen Sal
Forests, extensive grassy lands and Luxuriant Waterfalls provide
an element of abiding interest.
Note: Permit from wild life (Forest Department) required. Application
with passport details required at least 5 weeks in advance.
(If intent to stay in side the park) Visiting the park staying
outside does not require 5 weeks in advance information.
Entrance fee & Camera fee required. For VDO camera an earlier
permission is required from Chief wild Life Warden/Chief Conservator
of Forest, Bhubaneswar or Baripada.
Season: November to May.

DAY-1:
Proceed to Baripada, enroute visit some villages. After obtaining
necessary permits, drive to Lulung Tourist Bunalow, situated
on the footstep of the Similipal Forest.Total Km.-320 Km/7
Hrs Drive on NH 5
DAY-2: Enter into the Park and drive through the zigzag
forest road to watch wild animals. O/N Joranda/Barehipani
Forest House near the Waterfall.
Evening: - Watch wild animals on the watch lower.
Total Distance - 76 Km
DAY-3: Drive through the forest and enjoy the beautiful
forest with natural beauty O/N at Chahala. Evening watch the
Wild Elephant.
Total Distance-40 Km
DAY-4: Morning proceed to Jashipur enroute visit some
Santal, Birhor (monkeymen) village. If interested drive further
to see the Kichekeswari temple build in black granite at Khiching.
Later drive to Bhubaneswar.
Total Distance-300 Km (for temple tour an extra 50 kms).

Chandaka
wild Life Sanctuary: Area:: 175.79 sq. km. Best Time::
Round the Year.
Nestled on Khurdha uplands of' North -Eastern Ghats' biotic
region, Chandaka forest, is a relic of wild land that once
extended all over Bhubaneswar. Spread over 193.39 sq.km of
rolling table land and small sprawling hillocks of Khurdha
and Cuttack Districts, it is a wildlife sanctuary since August
1982. The sanctuary, literally abutting on the capital city
of Orissa, is the pachyderm country. Originally established
to provide inviolate refuge for elephants with a view to minimize
their depredation, the sanctuary is now a treasure trove of
biodiversity.
FAUNA
Elephant is the flagship species and indicative of the potential
productivity of the habitat. Leopard is in the apex of biological
pyramid. Chital, Barking deer, Mouse deer, Wild pig, Common
langur, Rhesus monkey, small Indian civet, Common Indian mongoose,
Small Indian mongoose, Ruddy mongoose, Pangolin, Sloth bear,
Ratel, Indian wolf and Hyena are other mammals of the area.
Wild dogs are occasionally seen. Prominent birds of the sanctuary
are Peafowl, Red jungle fowl, Crested serpent eagle, Great
horned owl, Black headed oriole, Paradise fly catcher, Coucal
and stone curlew. Among reptiles, Rock python and Bengal Monitor
lizard are quite common. Chameleon, Common skink, Indian flap
shell turtle, Russel's viper, Bamboo pit viper, Common krait,
Common vine snake, Kukri snake, Indian bronze back are indicative
reptiles. Mugger crocodiles have remarkably adapted to large
water bodies after their release from enclosure.
4. Gahirmatha Turtle Sanctuary:
Area: 1435.00 sq.km.
Best season for visit: October-February
Close to the Bhitar Kanika Sanctuary is another of Orissa's
special sanctuaries - the Gahirmatha Turtle Sanctuary. This
stretch of beach is the breeding ground for the giant Olive
Ridley Turtles, who travel all the way from the Pacific Ocean
to mate and lay their eggs here. Every year, thousands of
these wonderful creatures can be seen here.
5. Puruna Bandha turtle sanctuary:: One can observe
the same turtles coming to ay their eggs near the meeting
points of Bay of Bengal and Rushikulya river in Ganjam. One
ca see them between drive from Chilika Lake to Gopalpur on
Sea. Special tented accommodation can arranged for night viewing
of turtle's laying their eggs.
